Distinguishing Features
Height 153cm (60in). White plumage. The bill is orange with black knob on top. The black knob at the base of the bill is larger in the male than than female. Both sexes alike.
Food
Mainly vegetarian eating aquatic vegetation, will also eat small animals and insects.
 
 
Nesting
Between March and May. Clutch of 5 to 7 eggs, off white to olive in colour. Incubation appx 36 days. Eggs incubated by female, both parents tending the cygnets.
Habitat

Lakes, slow moving rivers, and open stretches of water with shallows.

Other information

The nest is made from large mounds of vegetation including rushes and reeds. It is constructed on islands or on the bank and is made by both parents.

Mute Swans can be very protective towards there offspring. The posturing includes arching its wings over its back with head drawn back.

Young cygnets are protected from danger by climbing on the backs of their parents between the arched wings.
